Catherine McGuiness : Lucky

We’re delighted to congratulate Catherine McGuiness for her nomination as an Archibald Prize 2023 finalist with her portrait of Kylie Kwong. 

Catherine and Kylie instantly bonded when they met at the South Eveleigh Artist Markets back in December 2022. As an artist of Studio A, Catherine showcased some of her colourful artworks at the Artist Markets, one of which was purchased by Kylie Kwong. They were both drawn to each other’s positive energy and the connection prevails - Not long after, Catherine invited Kylie to become the muse of her new painting. 

The initial sketches were done at Lucky Kwong, Kylie’s beloved eatery named in memory of her son. Catherine has masterfully illustrated the essence of Kylie and Lucky Kwong in her authentic way, utilising rich, earthy and natural colours to capture the celestial space. She has also included some of the special items that adorn Lucky Kwong: A Tibetan chime, Tibetan wooden bowls and a dark emu crafted by Uncle Badger Bates at Eveleigh Works. ‘Lucky’ is written all over the artwork, a meaningful final touch symbolic of the ever-present existence of Lucky’s spirit.

The artwork titled ‘Lucky’ has been nominated as one of the 57 Archibald Prize 2023 finalists out of 949 entries. View the artwork at the Art Gallery of NSW exhibition from May 6 – September 3, 2023.
